If you have been blogging for some time now and struggling to bring in any real money from it, do not worry, you’re not alone. While earning money from blogging can seem like an uphill battle at first. And the fact that “only 13% of bloggers manage to earn $1,000 or more in a month” doesn’t help our case either.
So we’ve laid out some steps that most of the bloggers who make a living out of blogging follow. To some extent the process is simple – but you should understand that the success rate depends on how well each step is executed.
Your Blog Will Not Make You Any Money
The people will.
The primary need for your blog to generate some sort of income is to have an audience. Now you don’t necessarily need 30,000+ people visiting your blog every day, but you should have some sort of audience (apart from your best friend and family members).
Building an audience is a two-way process. You get what you give. You cannot just publish useless bulk content and expect monetary benefits (or any benefits) in return. There are more than 2 million blogs published every day.
Enough for your blog to sink and drown in the ocean of content.
You need to focus on creating content that adds value to people’s life. When you are able to change people’s life (even if that means making them smile once a day), they will start valuing your content and trusting you – both of which are equally important when you plan on making money in future.
So before we move onto the next step make sure you get this sequence right:
1. Traffic First
2. Monetization Second
Give Some Space To The Advertisers
Selling advertising spots on your blog is the easiest way to start making money and that’s how most bloggers start. As your traffic and brand grows, so will the advertisers who be willing will to pay to get the exposure to your audience.
Ad networks like Google Adsense can further help you run ads on your blog.
There are two popular types of ads:
CPC/PPC Ads: Cost per click or pay per click ads are usually banners you place in your content or sidebar. You get paid for each time a reader clicks on the ad.
CPM Ads: CPM Ads, or cost per 1,000 impressions, are ads that pay you a fixed amount money based on how many people view your ads.
Advertisements can be very lucrative but it’s important to not get greedy and flood your website with Ads. Nothing repels people more than a website stuffed with ads.
Most people tend to have a misconception of Affiliate Marketing as some sleazy online marketing activity but when you really break it down it is one of the most logical and effective way to monetize your blog.
To put it simply affiliate marketing is when you link other people’s product or services (example: flipkart) on your blog and people from your website follow that link to ultimately buy that product or service. For every sale executed from your shared link you get a commission.
And that’s how you make money through affiliate marketing.
TIP: It’s recommended to link products and services that are relevant to your blog and add value to your audience
Sell Your Own Products
If you can help other people sell their products and services, your brand has certainly grown to a point where you can try a different source of income; like selling your own products to your audience.
But what do you sell?
Some of the things that you can sell are:
- Online courses/workshops
- Merchandise (T-shirts, Mugs, Bags etc.)
The list is never ending. Just make sure that whatever you sell is relevant and useful to your audience.
Create membership for exclusive content
Another great way of monetizing your blog is to create a members only area on your site.
Here you will publish exclusive content that will not be available to public. And given that you have accumulated a decent audience, a percentage of your audience will be willing to pay a small fee to gain access to that content. You can charge your premium members monthly or a one-time membership fee, that’s totally your call.
The key here is to develop exclusive content that’s worth the price and not easily available for free elsewhere.
Making money from blogging takes a lot of persistence but it sure does pay-off in the long run.
Just remember these two essential steps for generating real profit:
1. Consistently publishing good content.
If you are able to create top quality content consistently (Note this is where most of the bloggers struggle), then you have won half of the battle.
2. Understand what works for you
You don’t have to use all of the above mentioned strategies at once. You need to understand and recognize what strategy will work the best for you and then start from there.
And of course, don’t be afraid to experiment and tweak the strategies because over time you will learn, what works for you and what doesn’t.
We hope this article helps you in monetizing your blog.
